Mole Removal
Moles removed by excision, (cutting) with stitches, are usually darker in color or flat moles or both. Dr. Moy will map out the mole, sterilize the area, numb the area and remove the mole.
What is a mole?
Many people refer to a mole as any dark spot or irregularity in the skin.
What is a pigmented lesion?
A pigmented lesion is a raised or flat spot on the skin, which is brownish, blue-black or tan in color. Moles, freckles, sunspots, birthmark or aging spots are all pigmented lesions.
How do you separate harmless moles from potentially cancerous ones?
Each mole is different, and not all moles need to be removed.
If you suspect a mole may need removal be sure to check for
the following signs:
Asymmetry: If you divide the mole in half, the two parts do not match. This type of asymmetry may be a sign of cancer.
Border: Irregular edges that are ragged or notched may be a
suspicious sign.
Color: Uneven or multiple colors that may vary from brown, black, and pink to red, white, and blue can signal melanoma, a type of skin cancer.
Diameter: A mole may be abnormal if it is bigger than a pencil eraser.
Elevation: A raised or uneven mole can be a sign of skin cancer.
